Frances J. Laven Scholarship

2018 Frances J. Laven Scholarship Guidelines

Applications for the 2018 scholarship closed on January 5, 2018.

The successful applicant will be notified mid-March 2018, and announced during the CAPCSD conference in Austin, Texas, April 11-14, 2018.

Program Description
The Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD) promotes service by students in Communication Sciences and Disorders. In support of this goal, CAPCSD is funding one student scholarship to recognize exemplary student service.

Award Description
This award is intended for graduate students in a professional program (Master’s SLP, AuD, or SLP-D) who have shown exemplary service. Examples of service may include, but are not limited to, community service, service to the department or university, or service to the greater discipline.

Award Amount
One $5,000 scholarship.

Graduate students currently enrolled in a professional graduate program (Master’s SLP, AuD, or SLP-D) at a CAPCSD member institution with membership in good standing as of September 15, 2017.

Member programs may nominate only one scholarship application to be reviewed by CAPCSD. Programs with multiple potential applicants may devise their own internal review process for the selection of one applicant. The selected candidate can submit their own application.

Application Requirements

– Nomination letter from a faculty mentor signed by the department chair
– Student CV/Resume
– One-page essay (350 word limit) on service, written by the student, that includes:
– Description of the long-term impact of the service
– Demonstration of commitment to service
– Student’s leadership role
– Self-reflection on the experience’s impact on the student’s development
