Ph.D. Scholarship

Ph.D. Scholarship Program Guidelines

Information for the 2019 application cycle will be available in August 2018.

The Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD) is committed to addressing the Ph. D. shortage in communication sciences and disorders. To this end, CAPCSD will address a salient factor influencing the Ph. D. pipeline: time to degree completion.  CAPCSD announces a scholarship program for students pursuing a research doctoral degree (i.e., Ph. D.) focused on an academic career in communication sciences and disorders.  CAPCSD will fund up to ten (10) scholarships and each successful applicant receives a scholarship for $20,000. These scholarships are intended for those students who have advanced to the candidacy stage of their respective doctoral programs (ABD). Priority will be given to those applicants completing their degrees in Fall 2019 or beyond.

Eligibility Requirements

  • At the time of the application, candidates must have successfully advanced to candidacy in a regionally accredited academic program, at a CAPCSD member institution with membership in good standing as of September 15, 2018.
  • Member institutions can nominate only one scholarship application. Those with multiple potential applicants may devise their own internal review process for the selection of one applicant. The selected candidate can submit his or her own application.

Application Process

The application requires:

  • Summary of the dissertation research (1,000-word limit).
    1. Dissertation research plan
    2. Background
    3. Specific aims/objectives
    4. Methods and outcome measures
    5. Anticipated completion date
  • Supporting Documents
    1. Cover letter from the applicant with a brief introduction of the research project and stated commitment to an academic position upon completion of their Ph.D. program. The cover letter should include reference to current Ph.D. funding and how a CAPCSD scholarship would facilitate completion of the dissertation research (two pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, one-inch margins).
    2. Research Reference Citations
    3. Curriculum Vitae
    4. Letter of Support from research advisor
    5. Advisor’s bio sketch

Basis for Evaluation:

  • Stated commitment to an academic career in communication sciences and disorders
  • Strength of proposed dissertation research project
  • Strength of applicant CV (publishing, presenting, teaching, etc.)
  • Strength of rationale for how this scholarship would impact timely completion of Ph. D.
  • Strength of mentor nomination letter
