The Council of Graduate Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders has
had an active summer and early fall in terms of regular work that goes on
throughout the year, as well as responding to the resolutions passed
following the annual meeting, and appointing committee members and creating
new Working Groups. The following update highlights the activities of the
past three months.
Council Membership Increases. We are pleased to welcome four new
programs: the University of New Hampshire (Stephen N. Calculator, Ph.D.),
Duquesne University (Mikael D.Z. Kimelman, Ph.D.), the University of
Nebraska at Omaha (John E. Christensen, Ph.D.), and Worcester State College
(Susan V. Rezen, Ph.D.).
1998 Conference. The 1998 Conference Program Committee met in Palm
Springs, California in July to draft a proposal for the 1998 Annual
Conference to be held April 16-18. The Conference Committee consists of
Elaine McNiece, Chair, Rodger Dalstrom, Co-Chair, and Kim Wilcox, EB
Liaison, with Mary Ambroe providing technical assistance. The Executive
Board is enthusiastic about the well-rounded and exciting proposed program.
The theme for the conference will be "In a Climate of Change" and will
present a modified program format based on your feedback from last year.
Again, an opportunity will be provided for groups to network. If you are
interested in scheduling a meeting, please call the Council office to
arrange room and time. More details will be provided at the Council's
Annual Corporate Business Meeting at the ASHA Convention on Wednesday,
November 19.
1997 Corporate Business Meeting. The Council's Corporate Business Meeting
at the ASHA Convention will be held on Wednesday, November 19 from 7:00 to
9:30 p.m. in the Sheraton Boston Hotel, the Commonwealth Room. Please plan
to attend to become better informed about the Council's work, network with
colleagues, and provide input on important issues.
1997 Resolutions. As you know, the CAPCSD passed nine resolutions by mail
ballot following the annual conference in April. Action has been taken or
is being proposed with respect to all of those resolutions, as follows
(actions are numbered to represent the resolution numbers):
A letter has been sent to the Chair of the ASHA Certification Board
supporting the development of CCC standards that are less prescriptive and
are focused more on outcomes.
A Working Group on Pre- and Post-Doctoral Education has been appointed.
The Working Group will be Chaired by Irv Hochberg, with Robert Fox, Ann
Smit, and Fred Minifie as members.
The CAPCSD has submitted a resolution to Charlena Seymour, Chair of
Legislative Council, asking for the rescission of LC 44-93. This is in
response to our resolution calling for the rescinding of action that
designated the AuD as the preferred title for the practice of audiology.
The LC resolution containing this action (44-93) also contained other
actions as well. I suspect that the Council will receive some negative
input regarding our proposed resolution.
Correspondence has been sent to the AAA and ASHA reiterating the
Council's position against entitlement.
A Working Group on Educational Outcomes has been appointed. The
Working Group will be chaired by Brooke Halowell with Nan Lund, Bob
Augustine, and Nick Bankson as members.
An invitation to undergraduate only programs to join the Council of
Graduate Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders is being prepared
and will be sent shortly. By-law changes are being considered to reflect
this change in membership.
The Executive Board will review the Long Range Plan at the November meeting.
A Working Group on Diversity has been appointed. The Working Group will
be chaired by Joel Stark with Hariette Gregg and Barbara Johnson as members.
The Council has asked for the rescission of the requirement of the
doctoral degree as the entry-level degree for the practice of audiology
through the rescission of LC 44-93.
Information Exchange Committee. Our most hearty thanks to Linda
Petrosino, Chair, and the committee for the countless hours sent analyzing
and reporting the data for the 1996-97 CAPCSD National Survey. It is
included in this mailing and we know you will appreciate the committee's work!
Proceedings of the 1997 Annual Conference. The Proceedings were mailed
recently and should be in your hands by the time you receive this Status
Report. Congratulations to Cheryl Scott, Past Chair and the Publications
committee for the timely publication of the Proceedings.
Membership Directory. The Membership Directory is being updated. Don't
forget that Council members have the opportunity to review the Directory of
the Council Homepage for accuracy prior to final printing. You will receive
an email notice when listings are available for review.
New Committee Members. Please check the Membership Directory when you
receive it for the full list of officers, committee members, and working
group members. Thank these fine colleagues for their volunteer efforts on
behalf of the Council!
Reauthorization of IDEA. As you know a packet of correspondence regarding
the reauthorization of IDEA was sent to member programs. It was also sent
to Charlena Seymour, ASHA President. I have received several phone calls
and letters regarding your comments and concerns. We will be discussing
these responses at the meetings in November and look forward to your
continued input. We are also in the planning stages for a small EB-EB
meeting some time in January with ASHA to talk about this and other concerns.
Web Page. Don't forget to check the Council's Web Page. I believe at
last count we had 40 Position Vacancies listed? Other interesting
information awaits your perusal at www.CAPCSD.org!
