STATUS REPORT

JUNE 1998

• Election Results. We are pleased to announce that the following individuals have been elected to serve on the Executive Board of the CAPCSD:

• Elaine McNeice, as President-Elect
• Dennis Nash, as Treasurer
In addition, Linda Petrosino has agreed to serve for a second term on the Executive Board as Chair of the Information Exchange Committee.

Many thanks to those who agreed to run for electionthis year.
 

• Special Thanks! As Maurice Mendel ends his term of office on the Executive Board, we owe him our thank you on behalf of the entire Council for his excellent leadership and service. Thank you also to Linda Petrosino and Dennis Nash for the work during their first terms of office, and we look forward to their continuing excellent work!

• 1998 Annual Conference.  The April Conference in Palm Springs was another successful meeting based on both record attendance and verbal and written feedback from attendees. Many felt that the conference addressed timely, relevant issues. The setting was conducive to excellent networking opportunities (it was often difficult to get attendees back inside after the breaks), and all seemed to enjoy the Riviera Hotel.

Many thanks are due to Elaine McNeice, Rodger Dalston, Kim Wilcox, and Mary Ambroe for their excellent work in planning and carrying out the myriad of detailed tasks for a great conference!
 

• Article and By-Law Changes.  I am pleased to report that the proposed Article and By-Law changes were approved by written ballot. Morgan Downey is currently filing the necessary papers for us, and updated versions are being prepared for the Directory and Web Site. Thank you for your help with these changes.

• Name Change.  Although I used it earlier, we should note formally that the proposed name change for the Council was approved at the April Business Meeting and is now in effect with the approval of the Article and By-Law changes. We are now the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD). More than just words, the change reflects our commitment to adding undergraduate only programs to our membership. Again, thank you for your comments and vote.

• Technology Update. I again urge you to check the Council's Home page at www.CAPCSD.org or www.capcsd.org. Webmaster Maurice Mendel explains the changes under the "What's New" heading that have occurred with the relocation of the site to Memphis and his leadership. You'll see some familiar headings and some new ones as Maurice has added a photo gallery, links to AAA and ASHA sites, and easier to use directory, status reports, survey results, minutes of Council meetings, and more. Be sure you allow enough time to browse this important resource for Council communication. And thanks to Maurice, who obviously has the knack and commitment to providing us this service.

• Resolution Ballot Outcomes.   All nine resolutions distributed to the membership were passed by a fairly sizable majority vote. The specific resolutions and vote tallies are provided below, with tallies indicating For, Against, and Abstain. We thank those individuals who took the time to provide comments or raise questions on the ballot; we will be considering your input and the resolutions at the July Board Meeting.

• 98-1 (68 - 17 - 5) RESOLVED, That the Council develop and disseminate a set of educational materials describing all academic and career options and that these materials be used for recruitment and for advisement of students along the educational continuum.
• 98-2 (71 - 14- 5) RESOLVED, That the Council endorse the concept that undergraduate education in CSD be characterized as a broad-based, scientific curriculum that may include information concerning disorders of speech, language and hearing.
• 98-3 (79 - 9 -2) RESOLVED, That the Council establish a closed listserv dedicated to sharing ideas, information, and concerns regarding the measurement of educational outcomes.
• 98-4 (62 - 25 -3) RESOLVED, That the Council recommend that graduate programs allow applicants until April 15 to make final decisions regarding acceptance of offers of admission and financial aid for the following summer or fall semester.
• 98-5 (78 -4 -7) RESOLVED, That the Council encourage member programs and Related Professional Organizations to develop additional recruitment plans targeting high school and undergraduate students who are members of underrepresented groups.
• 98-6 (62 - 18- 10) RESOLVED, That the Council encourage doctoral programs in CSD to develop internships collaboratively with a wide variety of universities/college that employ faculty in CSD.
• 98-7 (70 - 12 - 8) RESOLVED, That the Council gather and disseminate information about varied models of doctoral education, such as direct progression from bachelors to doctoral education, integrated master's and doctoral programs, and interdisciplinary doctoral program; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Council recommend that doctoral programs in CSD adopt models in addition to the currently predominant three-degree sequence.
• 98-8 (80 - 9 - 1) RESOLVED, That the Council determine factors that lead students to 1) pursue doctoral studies, 2) discontinue doctoral studies, or 3) choose non-academic career paths upon completion of the doctoral degree; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That representatives from terminal Master's degree programs and undergraduate programs be in included in future Council initiatives regarding doctoral education.
• 98-9 (87 - 1 - 1) RESOLVED, That the Council (1) accept the generous annual student "Singular Scholarship" gift of $5,000 from Singular Publishing, (2) establish a scholarship committee to review submitted applications, (3) appropriate publicize this new endeavor and (4) express to Dr. Singh its thanks and appreciation for this generous gift.

• Conference Planning with AAA, ASHA. This summer (dates still under consideration) Maurice Mendel and Kim Wilcox will represent the Council at a conference planning meeting with AAA and ASHA. The goal is to develop plans for a conference that will focus on doctoral education in audiology. Stay tuned for details as they develop.

• China Trip. During the week of June 1st I had the honor of representing the Council on a trip to Beijing where with Fred Minifie, Tom Hixon, and Noel Matkin we made recommendations for beginning programs for speech-language pathology in China. We visited several rehabilitation and hospital facilities and found that in Beijing audiology services and schools for deaf children were pretty well established. Speech-language pathology education and services were sorely needed, however. We drafted an educational plan for the Medical School to consider and I'lll continue to keep Council members informed if those plans are accepted.

• Personal Note. It has been my great pleasure to serve as President of the Council this year. Each interaction has been rewarding from a personal and professional point of view, and I remain convinced that Council members constitute a "quality group." I also believe that the Council continues to grow as an independent and important organization, and I look forward to watching that growth continue. Thank you for your support and help!
