CAPCSD Announces the Slate of Candidates for 2024
CAPCSD is pleased to announce the slate of candidates for the 2024 elections. Program directors will receive the slate on Saturday, April 6th, and vote on behalf of their programs; they are encouraged to solicit input from their faculty, clinic directors, and staff before voting. Elections close on Monday, April 22nd, and results will be announced the week of April 29th.

My name is Tricia Montgomery, and I am a Certified Speech-Language Pathologist. I have a B.S. degree from Florida State University in Psychology, a B.A. degree in Communication Disorders from the University of Central Florida, and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Florida State University.
I currently serve as the Director of Clinical Education for both the Tallahassee Campus and the Distance Learning cohorts at Florida State University. My primary role is to ensure that our students are following the clinical course progression and meeting the degree requirements. I work closely with our clinical supervisors and clinical placement team to ensure students are exposed to a variety of clinical settings and the SLP Scope of Practice. Managing the administrative duties required for the coordination of both of these programs requires attention to detail, excellent organization, and time management skills.
Prior to this role, I served as the Graduate Program Director for Distance Learning in the School of Communication Science and Disorders. In this role, I was responsible for the clinical education and clinical placements for three cohorts of graduate students. When I was in this role, I spearheaded the shift to a clinical placement database and streamlined the clinical placement process. This process is now also utilized with our Tallahassee Campus students as they secure a full-time internship in their last semester.
This is my 4th year on the CAPCSD Board of Directors, where I serve as the VP for Professional Development. This position is the monitoring officer for the annual conference. During my tenure, I played an integral role in the launch of a successful virtual conference in 2021, successful conferences in Portland, Oregon, in 2022, and Orlando, Florida, in 2023, and we are in the process of 2024 Conference planning where we are making some innovative updates to the conference format based on attendee feedback. Additionally, during my tenure on the board, we have updated our strategic plan, reviewed and interviewed Association Management Companies, and tackled strategic initiatives such as developing a DEI position statement. Throughout these past 3 years, I have learned the value of remaining open to new ideas, staying flexible, listening to hear others, and working together for a common goal.

I am completing my first term as Treasurer of CAPCSD. Over the last 18 months, I have worked with the CAPCSD Board of Directors to meet their strategic goals by managing the finances of the organization, making recommendations for good stewardship of our resources, and considering additional ways to increase revenue and decrease spending, without minimizing the impact CAPCSD has on its members and member programs.
Additionally, I am Professor and Chair of the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. In this position, I manage a multi-million-dollar academic and clinical budget, oversee four on-campus clinics that provide over 10,000 services per year with an annual gross revenue of approximately $1 million, and have fostered the research growth of the department from essentially no extramural support to millions of dollars. Additionally, I manage the dissemination and investment of all scholarships and funds. In my 15 years as Chair, our department has never finished the fiscal year in the red, except for the COVID years. Using a portion of our clinical revenues each year, I work with my leadership team to budget purchases of state-of-the-art equipment to support our clinics, classrooms, and research labs, provide travel for 36 faculty to conferences, fund start-up expenses for new faculty, and support stipends for graduate assistants. In the past four years, I have worked closely with the university to design and implement the renovation of approx. 60,000 square feet of space for our department. As Chair, I mentor 12 tenure track or tenured faculty, 24 non tenure track (clinical) faculty, 25 staff members, and oversee four (4) degree programs totaling approximately 300 students. In addition to my administrative duties, I have maintained an active and productive research laboratory, successfully advised many doctoral students (AuD and PhD), and provided service to the university and profession, including multiple leadership positions.
I received my B.A. in English from University of North Carolina in 1993, my M.A. in Audiology from University of Tennessee in 1995, and my Ph.D. in Hearing Science (Mentor: Craig Champlin) from University of Texas-Austin in 1999.
